UTM naming tips

  • Use lowercase everywhere, since "Email" and "email" are reported as different values.
  • Use hyphens instead of spaces; the "Clean values" option does this for you by turning text into lowercase hyphenated slugs.
  • Agree on a short list of mediums such as cpc, email and social, or use quick presets (google/cpc, newsletter/email, facebook/social, linkedin/social) to stay consistent.
  • Put the details in utm_content, not in the campaign name.
  • Never add UTM tags to internal links on your own site.
  • Keep a shared sheet of the campaign URLs your team has created.

UTM values follow the same rules as good slugs. Try the URL slug generator for campaign names, or the kebab case converter for other naming formats.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a UTM link?

A UTM link is a normal URL with tracking parameters such as utm_source and utm_medium added to the query string. Analytics tools read them to attribute the visit.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. The builder shows a message until all three are filled in.

Will the builder keep my existing query string?

Yes. Existing parameters and any #hash fragment are kept, and the UTM parameters are added to the query string.

What does "Clean values" do?

It lowercases each value, turns spaces into hyphens and symbols like & into words, so "Spring Sale 2026" becomes spring-sale-2026.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

They do not change rankings, but tagged internal links can split your reports. Use UTMs only on links that point to your site from outside.

Do you store or track my links?

No. The URL is built in your browser using JavaScript and is not saved, shortened or sent anywhere.
